A filmmaker and award-winning photographer, Jim Moran has been active in the communication business for five decades.
A staff photographer with Yorkshire Post Newspapers since 1987, over the years his work has appeared in newspapers, magazines and books. He has received several awards including Yorkshire Television’s Photographer of the Year in 1989 and Photographer of the Year in the Yorkshire Press Awards, also in 1989, for an atmospheric and poignant image for the aftermath of the Lockerbie disaster. The photograph was printed and re-printed around the world.
More recently, he has begun operating as a video filmmaker. His wide experience in arts photography includes front-of-house pictures for venues such as Harrogate Theatre and York Theatre Royal, rehearsal pictures for the West Yorkshire Playhouse, and candid shots of an array of actors and filmmakers.
His subjects include Hollywood legend Jean Simmons, Oscar nominee Pete Postlethwaite, Rachel Griffiths, Ray Winstone, Kerry Fox, the late Bob Peck, Ewan McGregor, Brenda Blethyn, Sir Ian McKellen, Sir Tom Courtenay, Jenny Agutter, Timothy West, and filmmakers John Schlesinger, Kay Mellor, Freddie Francis, James Bond producer Michael G. Wilson, Charles Sturridge, Simon (The Full Monty) Beaufoy, Mark (Brassed Off) Herman, and Mika Kaurismaki.
He has also worked extensively on location, covering the shoots of a number of feature films made in the Yorkshire region over the last ten years. They include:

Additionally, he has enjoyed a close collaboration with the Leeds-based Northern School of Film & Television, covering the shoots of a range of student films including Silver Lining, Motherwood, Sinful, and End of Summer.
As a video filmmaker he has shot interviews with many veteran/cult actors, writers and directors. They include Lord Attenborough, Jean Simmons, Sir Tom Courtenay, Ken Annakin, Jack Cardiff, Hardy Kruger, Roy Ward Baker, Mike Hodges, Jean-Marc Barr and Gunnar Hansen.
He has worked closely with both the Bradford and Leeds Film Festivals and has shot a number of films including Leatherface Speaks – An Informal Interview with Gunnar Hansen, Richard Attenborough: The Actors’ Director, Jean Simmons: Rose of England and Mike Hodges: Uncompromising Poet of the Prescient.
Personal projects include the short subjects Art and the Artist, shot at the artists’ enclave in Dean Clough, Halifax, The Exchange, featuring deaf photographer Emma Amsden.
